OUR HISTORY
Planted in 1960, Franklin Lakes Baptist Church has been a part of this community for over 50 years. The stories run deep, as our church family has seen the landscape of New Jersey change and grow. In fact, you can still discover some of those stories as many of the planting members are still active at our church—which just goes to show, once you come you won’t want to leave.

OUR MISSION
To glorify God through worship, stewardship, and service (Ephesians 3:20-21; 4:11-16) by focusing on intentional discipleship (of both the believer and the lost) and the strengthening of the saints.

OUR VISION
To produce mature disciples of Jesus Christ though passionate and intentional planting, cultivating, and evangelizing (Matthew 28:19-20).

OUR PASTOR
A Snapshot
Matthew Carpenter is the Senior (and sole) pastor at Franklin Lakes Baptist Church.
He is a gifted communicator and teacher, convicted about speaking the truth of the Bible as practically as possible. God has given him a vision and a passion for helping people meet Jesus, and each week he shares God’s word and its application in our daily lives.
Matt has a passion for New Jersey and a deep desire to grow the Kingdom of God. With a unique style of teaching, Matt walks his church family (and pretty much anyone who will listen) through the entirety of God’s Word—book by book, chapter by chapter and verse by verse. Don’t worry, he holds nothing back.

His Story (in his words)
I love to talk about the Bible and about Jesus but I’m not a huge fan of talking about myself, so this will be brief… Quick Facts:

  • I was adopted.
  • Grew up in Upstate New York (Cortland, Sherburne, Norwich… and a few places that you probably can’t even find on google earth).
  • My mom died when I was 11 of brain cancer, which left me skeptical to God and church.
  • My dad was paralyzed temporarily for 3 years when I was 13-16, which left me angry at God and the church.
  • I dropped out of High School (until my Senior year) to work and support my family, which left me cynical about God and the church.
  • In my early teens I decided that Christianity wasn’t for me. What began as indifferent agnosticism slowly became a vehement, intellectual atheism.
  • C.S. Lewis described those years of my life more accurately than anyone I have ever heard or read. He wrote, "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." I spent my senior year of High School and my freshmen year of college discovering this "other world" Lewis spoke of, as the Holy Spirit opened the eyes of my heart and rooted my faith in Jesus Christ and the gospel about Him.
  • I’ve been to Bible college & too many seminaries (for my post-grad work) to mention.
  • I married my best friend, Julie, and the Lord has blessed us with 4 children.
  • I am not just a "employee" who is a "professional pastor” in a church. I can tell you that my life is being changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ along with my church family, daily.
  • I love the Bible (it borders on obsessive).
  • I don’t have a filter… I’m working on it.

Hope for Franklin Lakes Baptist Church
My hope is that we would be more than just a group of people that see each other once a week. My hope is that we would do something for the glory of God. My hope is that we would see those who don’t know Jesus come to know Jesus and those who know him to worship Him rightly. My hope is that in view of God’s majesty we would walk in compassion, mercy and grace and that both our minds and our hearts would be full of and shaped by Him.
My hope is for New Jersey in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it’s shaped by a firm conviction that God’s not sick of us or finished with us.
